Early Head Start
Established in 1994, our Early Head Start program serves Marion, Alachua, Citrus, Dixie, Gilchrist and Levy counties.

The Head Start Act Amendments of 1994 established the Early Head Start program, which expands the benefits of early childhood development to low-income families with children under three and to pregnant women.

Program Purpose
The purpose of this program is to:


  • Enhance children's physical, social, emotional and cognitive development.

  • Enable parents to be better caregivers of and teachers to their children.

  • Help parents meet their own goals, including that of economic independence.
     
  • Program Services
    The services provided by Early Head Start programs are designed to reinforce and respond to the unique strengths and needs of each child and family. Services include:

  • quality early education in and out of the home

  • home visits

  • parent education

  • including parent-child activities

  • comprehensive health services, including services to women before, during and after pregnancy

  • nutrition and case management and peer support groups for parents.


    Early Head Start focuses on four cornerstones essential to quality programs: child development, family development, community building and staff development. Projects must coordinate with local Head Start programs to ensure continuity of services for children and families.
     

  • Locally
    Our local Head Start program has 38 classes throughout Marion and Citrus Counties. We currently serve 639 children.
     
    Traditional Program Schedule
    Children attend a classroom setting four days a week for six hours and Fridays from 8:00- 12:00. We follow our local school system's yearly calendar including holidays.
     
    Full Day Program Schedule
    Our local Head Start offers a full-day option for parents or legal guardian who work or attend school full-time.


    The hours are 6:30 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.


    Transportation must be provided by the family. To be eligible, a family must show documentation that they are working or attending school full-time. Enrollment is limited. Children are selected according to need. A full- day/ full-year program is provided at select locations.
